On August 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber dropped the world's first atomic bomb on the Japanese town of Hiroshima. The explosion itself killed 80,000 citizens and wiped out 90% of the population.

Three days later, another B-29 dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki. This bomb was estimated to kill around 40,000 citizens on impact.

Who is Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto?Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto, also known as The Reverend Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto throughout the book, is a pastor of the Hiroshima Methodist Church. He had a wife and child that were living in Ushida at the time. Before the bomb hit, he was about to unload a cart of clothes at a wealthy man's home in the suburbs. Mr. Tanimoto had studied at Emory College in Atlanta, Georgia. There, he studied theology. He graduated in 1940. While in America, he learned to speak excellent English. He also regularly wore American clothes. Because of his actions, he was accused many times for being a spy for the Americans and that he could not be trusted. |
